Did a similar audience sing-a-long to this song at his ACL set in 2009. One of the most memorable moments of any concert I’ve been to. Soul-shaking.

4AD Sessions with Bon Iver and S.Carey
February 20, 2012
Recorded in AIR Studio’s Lyndurst Hall – a building that was originally a church and missionary school designed in 1880 by the great Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse (designer of the Natural History Museum) – Vernon was joined only by Sean Carey, with the pair positioning themselves opposite one another at two grand pianos. Although neither Justin nor Sean’s first instrument is piano, they were able to remodel the songs in a way that showcases their complimentary vocals and, perhaps more strikingly, a seemingly effortless ability to experiment with form and structure.
As such, fans are treated to jaw-dropping interpretations of several songs from both the new album and the Blood Bank EP, as well as a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’. And interpretation is an apt word, as these songs are artfully abstracted from their original incarnations. Rather than layer the sound as on Bon Iver, Bon Iver, the focus is on paring back, in part evoking the minimalist approach of contemporary classical music, while remaining true enough to the source material to retain those elements characteristic of Bon Iver.
As on ‘Babys’ and ‘Hinnom, TX’, Justin’s trademark falsetto is positioned centre stage, framed by subtle and unexpected instrumental flourishes that render the performance simultaneously weighty and airless. It’s quite an achievement that songs so widely-known and loved in their recorded form are able gain in emotional impact, and stands as testament to Bon Iver’s singular talent.

Bon Iver, Nick Cave, and the struggles of being a Grammy Nominee
December 4, 2011
During an interview with The New York Times, Justin Vernon addressed the subject of winning Grammy’s which he explains is not the reason he makes music. He mentioned a letter Nick Cave wrote to MTV after being nominated for an award which resonated with his own feelings on the subject (see letter below). Vernon was asked this question by NYT several months ago so who knows if he feels the same way after being nominated for 4 Grammy’s, but I think if bands like Arcade Fire and Bon Iver are finally being recognized in an industry filled with corporate manufactured artists who haven’t sung a real note live in their entire career then they should show up and honor their success and show the world what a real musician looks/sounds like because everyone seems to have forgotten. It’s time to turn what was starting to become a discouraging joke into a well-respected award again. Independent artists need to show up and respect the efforts and honor the change so it will continue. Think of it, not as a competition or as a trophy but as a way to open doors for your genre and your peers. No you’re not selling out you’re just taking ownership of what these awards should be about.
TO ALL THOSE AT MTV,
I WOULD LIKE TO START BY THANKING YOU ALL FOR THE SUPPORT YOU HAVE GIVEN ME OVER RECENT YEARS AND I AM BOTH GRATEFUL AND FLATTERED BY THE NOMINATIONS THAT I HAVE RECEIVED FOR BEST MALE ARTIST. THE AIR PLAY GIVEN TO BOTH THE KYLIE MINOGUE AND P. J. HARVEY DUETS FROM MY LATEST ALBUM MURDER BALLADS HAS NOT GONE UNNOTICED AND HAS BEEN GREATLY APPRECIATED. SO AGAIN MY SINCERE THANKS.
HAVING SAID THAT, I FEEL THAT IT’S NECESSARY FOR ME TO REQUEST THAT MY NOMINATION FOR BEST MALE ARTIST BE WITHDRAWN AND FURTHERMORE ANY AWARDS OR NOMINATIONS FOR SUCH AWARDS THAT MAY ARISE IN LATER YEARS BE PRESENTED TO THOSE WHO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH THE COMPETITIVE NATURE OF THESE AWARD CEREMONIES. I MYSELF, DO NOT. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN OF THE OPINION THAT MY MUSIC IS UNIQUE AND INDIVIDUAL AND EXISTS BEYOND THE REALMS INHABITED BY THOSE WHO WOULD REDUCE THINGS TO MERE MEASURING. I AM IN COMPETITION WITH NO-ONE.
MY RELATIONSHIP WITH MY MUSE IS A DELICATE ONE AT THE BEST OF TIMES AND I FEEL THAT IT IS MY DUTY TO PROTECT HER FROM INFLUENCES THAT MAY OFFEND HER FRAGILE NATURE.
SHE COMES TO ME WITH THE GIFT OF SONG AND IN RETURN I TREAT HER WITH THE RESPECT I FEEL SHE DESERVES – IN THIS CASE THIS MEANS NOT SUBJECTING HER TO THE INDIGNITIES OF JUDGEMENT AND COMPETITION. MY MUSE IS NOT A HORSE AND I AM IN NO HORSE RACE AND IF INDEED SHE WAS, STILL I WOULD NOT HARNESS HER TO THIS TUMBREL – THIS BLOODY CART OF SEVERED HEADS AND GLITTERING PRIZES. MY MUSE MAY SPOOK! MAY BOLT! MAY ABANDON ME COMPLETELY!
SO ONCE AGAIN, TO THE PEOPLE AT MTV, I APPRECIATE THE ZEAL AND ENERGY THAT WAS PUT BEHIND MY LAST RECORD, I TRULY DO AND SAY THANK YOU AND AGAIN I SAY THANK YOU BUT NO…NO THANK YOU.
YOURS SINCERELY, NICK CAVE 21 OCT 96.
Right on Brotha!
This is reblogged from Bon Iver’s official site. Justin Vernon’s point of view on MTV and the VMA’s
You can find the original post here: Bon Iver
“there are great moments in awards shows. bruno mars sounded really good doing ‘valerie’ for amy winehouse. i don’t think anyone is bummed that adele is killing everything. her voice was real and focused when i went thru and watched highlights from tonight. kanye and jay z are always murdering. beyonce is pregnant. yes this is awesome as shit, culturally speaking. but can i just ask, the reader, us, we … as non-rhetorically as possible: don’t we seem dumb? didn’t MTV lose the fight against themselves? Didn’t Rock’n’Roll STOP? Why are the lights so bright? isn’t our talent as artists enough? Why do we try SO hard? Does a moonman mean what it did back then? Should we feel pumped when we get one? Should our mom’s cry? I am not even thinking about it that hard. I will close my eyes in 90 seconds and have total peace… But, seriously. Why are we waving around so much? Why do we NEED this shit so bad? Why don’t we just have MUSIC? DO music? soul? I don’t know. I don’t mean to criticize. Anyone. Actually. Except for MTV. You might have had a very large opportunity to be stabilize your self as a global presence of culture and art about 15 years ago and you fucked the dog. Sorry. Im with my girls on this one. Its becoming increasingly clear as I think about it more and more, that the dollars, if they ARE apart of why you are doing something… they are apart of why you are doing something. that’s fucked to me. that’s the absence of spirit, glue, fabric of what makes us a person. it distracts us from what we could be doing: WORK. on EARTH. Better say this: Forget what I say. If you even read this, you’ll probably say to yourself, who is this ass saying shit? It doesn’t matter what i say. it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter. But this one last thought: What would Bill Hicks say?”

The music of Justin Vernon offers exhilarating evidence that the rural really are different, and not in the pickup-drivin’, flag-fetishizin’ way that sells in Nashville. Five years ago, following the breakups of his band and his relationship, Vernon retreated from North Carolina to his native Wisconsin. Snowbound in a rustic cabin for the winter—or so the story goes—he produced a collection of quasi-religious hymns to the terrible beauty of heartbreak, which he self-recorded under the name Bon Iver, an intentional bastardization of the French phrase bon hiver (good winter). Lyrics off Bon Iver’s new album
May 19, 2011
Bon Iver‘s label JagJaguwar has posted the lyric’s to some songs of the new album.
I’ve reposted them below.
Perth
Iʼm tearing up, acrost your face
move dust through the light
to fide your name
it’s something fane
this is not a place
not yet awake, I’m raised of make
still alive who you love
still alive who you love
still alive who you love
in a mother, out a moth
furling forests for the soft
gotta know been lead aloft
so I’m ridding all your stories
what I know, what it is, is pouring – wire it up!
you’re breaking your ground
Minnesota, WI
armour let it through, borne the arboretic truth you kept posing
sat down in the suit, fixed on up it wasn’t you by finished closing
ramble in the roots, had the marvel, moved the proof be kneeled fine’s glowing
storing up the clues, it had its sullen blue bruised through by showing
settle past a patience where wishes and your will are spilling pictures
water’s running through in the valley where we grew to write this this scripture:
never gonna break
never gonna break
never gonna break
never gonna break
not for a part in any gamut of the dark
doubled in the toes annex it, it minute closed in the morning
did not lose it in the stack’s stow, imma lay that call back on ya
you know it won’t beseech you, we’re laying in an open field
I will let you grow, no need to know this
so carry on my dear, what is clear up in the daylight is we’re hung here
fall is coming soon, a new year for the moon and the Hmong here
never gonna break
never gonna break
never gonna break
never gonna break
all that it seems
bellows tracing through the streams
never gonna break
never gonna break
never gonna break
never gonna break
all at its seams
swallows swelling for the beams
Holocene
“Someway, baby, it’s part of me, apart from me.”
you’re laying waste to Halloween
you fucked it friend, it’s on it’s head, it struck the street
you’re in Milwaukee, off your feet
…and at once I knew I was not magnificent
strayed above the highway aisle
(jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
3rd and Lake it burnt away, the hallway
was where we learned to celebrate
automatic bought the years you’d talk for me
that night you played me ʻLip Paradeʼ
not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree
saying nothing, that’s enough for me
…and at once I knew I was not magnificent
hulled far from the highway aisle
(jagged, vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
Christmas night, it clutched the light, the hallow bright
above my brother, I and tangled spines
we smoked the screen to make it what it was to be
now to know it in my memory:
…and at once I knew I was not magnificent
high above the highway aisle
(jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
Towers
for the love, Iʼd fallen on
in the swampy August dawn
what a mischief you would bring young darling!
when the onus is not all your own
when you’re up for it before you’ve grown
from the faun forever gone
in the towers of your honeycomb
I’d a tore your hair out just to climb back darling
when you’re filling out your only form
can you tell that itʼs just ceremon’
now you’ve added up to what you’re from
build your tether rain-out from your fragments…
break the sailor’s table on your sacrum…
fuck the fiercest fables, I’m with Hagen
for the love, comes the burning young
from the liver, sweating through your tongue
well, youʼre standing on my sternum don’t you climb down darling
oh the sermons are the first to rest
smoke on Sundays when youʼre drunk and dressed
out the hollows where the swallow nests
Michicant
I was unafraid, I was a boy, I was a tender age
melic in the naked, knew a lake and drew the lofts for page
hurdle all the waitings up, know it wasn’t wedded love
4 long minutes end and it was over it’d all be back
and the frost took up the eyes
pressed against the pane could see the veins and there was poison out
resting in a raze the inner claims I hadn’t breadth to shake
searching for an inner clout, may not take another bout
honey in the hale could fill the pales of loving less with vain
hon, it wasn’t yet the spring
aiming and it sunk and we were drunk and we had fleshed it out
nose up in the globes, you never know if you are passing out
no it wasn’t maiden-up, the falling or the faded luck
hung up in the ivory, both were climbing for a finer cause
love can hardly leave the room
with your heart
Hinnom, TX
(fall in
fall out
fall along)
in the first of light
past the Noachide
bodies wrapped in white
stranded every pain
baby, pasts are slain
“I got outta La Grange…”
in Hinnom
all this time
with your heart in mind
didn’t you edit
in Hinnom
go, the least
and the precious feast
the in-vetted
sand it starts to steal
dirt and ice imbed in cheeks
in the potter’s field
solar peace
well it swirls and sweeps
you just set it
strangers scattering
nether passage in the wind
off pennant tension ring
armor, down
on the wettest ground
not to vet it
Wash.
climb
is all we know
when thaw
is not below us
no, can’t grow up
in that iron ground
Claire, all too sore for sound
bet
is hardly shown
scraped
across the foam
like they stole it
and oh, how they hold it
Claire, we nearly forfeit
I… I’m growing like the quickening hues
I… I’m telling darkness from lines on you
over havens fora full and swollen morass, young habitat!
all been living alone, where the ice snap and the hold clast are known
home
we’re savage high
come
we finally cry
oh and we don it
because it’s right
Claire, I was too sore for sight
I… we’re sewing up through the latchet greens
I… un-peel keenness, honey, bean for bean
same white pillar tone as with the bone street sand is thrown where she stashed us at
all been living alone, where the cracks at in the low part of the stoning
Calgary
….
don’t you cherish me to sleep
never keep your eyelids clipped
hold me for the pops and clicks
I was only for the father’s crib
hair, old, long along
your neck onto your shoulder blades
always keep that message taped
cross your breasts you won’t erase
I was only for your very space
hip, under nothing
propped up by your other one, face ‘way from the sun
just have to keep a dialogue
teach our bodies: haunt the cause
I was only trying to spell a loss
joy, it’s all founded
pincher with the skin inside
you pinned me with your black sphere eyes
you know that all the rope’s untied
I was only for to die beside
so itʼs storming on the lake
little waves our bodies break
there’s a fire going out,
but there’s really nothing to the south
swollen orange and light let through
your one piece swimmer stuck to you
sold, I’m Ever
open ears and open eyes
wake up to your starboard bride
who goes in and then stays inside
oh the demons come, they can subside
Beth/Rest
errant heat to the star
and the rain let in
the hawser rolls, the vessel’s whole and Christ, it’s thin
well Iʼd know that you’d offer
would reveal it, though it’s soft and flat
won’t repeat it, cull and coffer’s that
for the soffit, hang this homeward
pry it open with your love
sending lost and alone standing offers
it is steep / it is stone
such recovery
from the daily press, the deepest nest, in keeper’s keep
all the news at the door
such a revelry
well, it’s hocked inside of everything you said to me
it was found what we orphaned
didn’t mention it would serve us picked
said your love is known
I’m standing up on it
aren’t we married?!
I ainʼt living in the dark no more
it’s not a promise, Iʼm just gonna call it
heavy mitted love
our love is a star
sure some hazardry
for the light before and after most indefinitely
danger has been stole away

My Top 10 Favorite Songs of 2009 (share yours in Comments)
December 5, 2009
Actually, I am not really sure if some of these came out in 2008 so I’m gonna cheat a little and say its what I listened to in 2009! Also, I didn’t translate these lyrics so if they are wrong please don’t blame me but feel free to add any corrections in comments if you’d like.
All around beauty
1. Bon Iver – Re: Stacks -Album For Emma
Lyrics
This my excavation and today is kumran
Everything that happens is from now on
This is pouring rain, This is paralyzed
I keep throwing it down two-hundred at a time
It’s hard to find it when you knew it
When your money’s gone, And you’re drunk as hell
On your back with your racks as the stacks as your load
In the back and the racks and the stacks are your load
In the back with your racks and you’re un-stacking your load
I’ve twisting to the sun I needed to replace
The fountain in the front yard is rusted out
All my love was down, In a frozen ground
There’s a black crow sitting across from me; his wiry legs are crossed
And he’s dangling my keys he even fakes a toss
This is not the sound of a new man or crispy realization
It’s the sound of the unlocking and the lift away
Your love will be, Safe with me

XPN David Dye’s World Cafe Live
(As written for XPN)
When faced with a recent personal tragedy, former Felice Brothers multi-instrumentalist Simone Felice had to make some tough choices: After the death of his first child, he decided to leave the band he’d founded with his brothers. Along with longtime friend and Parliament contributor Robert “Chicken” Burke, Felice formed The Duke & The King.
The band’s minimalist folk wades in the waters of nostalgia while retaining contemporary touches. Felice’s lyrics pine for the past alongside light acoustic guitar and drizzle of ambient effects, and it works: Instead of the loud, raucous energy of Felice’s former band, The Duke & The King favors contemplative ballads and rich storylines. The duo’s first album is titled Nothing Gold Can Stay.

6. The Dead Weather – I Cut Like a Buffalo -Album Horehound
I recently posted the “OFFICIAL” video on this site but check the link for the alternative version.
“She Cuts Up Her Buffalo,” you know what that means, that means you’re dead.
Check out their You Tube Channel: The Dead Weather TV Jack directs a lot of his video’s. There is no end to his talent.
One of my favorite websites is The White Stripes site. Really creative and beautifully designed. I really want the Meg Diana Analog Camera. (Santa)
The Raconteurs site is pretty damn cool too. Check it out.

7. Fleet Foxes- Oliver James -Album Fleet Foxes
Just an amazing sound, never a sell out, true to their roots. You would never see them pushing their own clothing line unless it was for Goodwill or Salvation Army. Not even a website-Luckily they do have a MySpace page. So old school I love it. Check out this video for some awesome acoustic and a cappella Fleet Foxes. Cannot wait for their next album .

J. Tillman, the drummer for Fleet Foxes also has a solo career. I just think he’s a master with percussion as you can hear in Crosswinds.

9. MGMT Time to Pretend-Oracle Spectacular
Time to express my humble opinion; I think Andrew Vanwhatsisname is an arrogant little brat who goes on about being a college graduate from a school that for a LOT of people is a safety school. Having said that, I do think this album has some really good songs. I wish these kids who have a hard time expressing themselves in a public forum without sounding arrogant or entitled would just shut up and sing.

10. Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears –Sugarfoot-Album Tell Me What Your Name Is
I see Black Joe Lewis as this decades James Brown with a little bit of The Time thrown in (outfits and hair a lot less over the top). Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to see him in Austin but he sure knows how to put a little sizzle in your wiggle.
